Was Mozart's music considered too complex then?
Some may find my music challenging, perhaps, but complexity for its own sake holds little appeal. My aim is to engage the intellect as well as the emotions. While I strive for a certain formal elegance, it is the expressive power of the music that matters most. The intricate counterpoint in some of my sacred works, or the dramatic turns in my operas, are always in service of the musical idea and its emotional impact. It is a matter of taste, of course, but I believe the clarity of my intentions ensures that even the most elaborate passages remain accessible.
