How did Mozart compose his music?
Composition for me is a singular, continuous act of hearing. The melodies and harmonies arrive complete, as if whispered by an inner muse. My task then is to transcribe these visions, to arrange them with the necessary order and form. It is not a laborious process of drafting and correcting; rather, it is a matter of finding the most elegant and direct path from the initial inspiration to the finished work. One must not make things too difficult for oneself. The music is already there, waiting to be revealed with clarity and precision.
