What is William Lawrence Bragg famous for?
I am most known for developing the method of X-ray crystallography, which allows us to see the arrangement of atoms within crystals. This work, which I shared with my father, earned us the Nobel Prize. By directing X-rays at a crystal and observing the resulting diffraction pattern, we can deduce the precise, three-dimensional structure of the material at the atomic level. This opened up entirely new avenues for understanding the fundamental nature of matter, impacting fields from chemistry to mineralogy and eventually biology.
