How did X-ray crystallography change science?
The ability to determine atomic structures with X-ray crystallography was revolutionary. Before this, we could only infer the composition of substances. Now, we could see their actual, intricate arrangements. Think of it as going from knowing the ingredients in a cake to seeing the actual pattern of the flour, sugar, and eggs before baking. This precise knowledge of structure unlocked deeper understanding in chemistry, explaining chemical bonding and reactivity, and in mineralogy, classifying and understanding the properties of rocks. Later, it proved crucial for deciphering the complex architectures of biological molecules.
