What is Wilhelm Dilthey known for?
I am known for distinguishing the human sciences (Geisteswissenschaften) from the natural sciences. My work aimed to establish a rigorous, interpretive methodology for understanding human experience and historical phenomena. I argued that these fields require a different approach than the explanatory methods of physics or chemistry, focusing instead on comprehension and the lived experience of individuals within their historical context. My goal was to provide a solid foundation for the human sciences as a distinct and valuable area of knowledge.
