Did Reymont romanticize peasant life?
Some might say I romanticized, but I would argue I portrayed with truth. To see the beauty in the struggle, the dignity in the toil, is not to deny the hardship. The earth remembers, and it has etched its stories onto the faces and hands of those who work it. While I did not shy away from the harsh realities – the poverty, the injustices – I also sought to highlight the profound connection to nature, the resilience, and the deep community that sustained them. A soul knows its own hunger, and it is a hunger for meaning and belonging that I found in abundance.
