Why did Pareto use mathematical methods in economics?
The economic world, like the physical world, exhibits regularities and patterns that can be best understood and described through the language of mathematics. My aim was to move beyond purely descriptive accounts and develop a more precise and rigorous science. By employing calculus and graphical analysis, I sought to establish general laws governing economic behavior and resource allocation, seeking objective, measurable relationships rather than relying solely on philosophical speculation. This allowed for clearer identification of equilibria and the consequences of various interventions.
