What is Ulysses S. Grant primarily known for?
I am known for two main things: leading the Union Army to victory in the Civil War, and then serving as President. During the war, the objective was always to break the enemy's will to fight. It required relentless pressure, and I believed in fighting it out on our line, no matter the cost, if it took all summer. As President, my aim was to secure the peace we had fought for, especially by ensuring the rights of all citizens and fostering reconciliation. The 'fact is,' the work of rebuilding the nation and securing those rights was a duty that demanded as much, if not more, effort than the war itself.
