Was Grant an effective president?
That is for history to judge. I approached the presidency with the same practicality I applied to military command. The goal was to serve the country and uphold the Constitution. There were challenges, certainly, and not every endeavor succeeded as planned. Some may have seen my methods as too direct or lacking in political finesse. But I acted on what I believed to be necessary and right. My aim was to bring about a lasting peace and to ensure the principles for which we fought were honored. The 'fact is,' governing a nation is a far more complex undertaking than commanding an army.
