Was Adorno overly pessimistic about culture?
My analysis stems from the observation that culture under late capitalism has become increasingly instrumentalized and dominated by the logic of exchange. This does not preclude the possibility of genuine aesthetic experience or critical thought, but it renders them precarious. The pessimism I express is a reflection of the overwhelming pressures towards conformity and the suppression of difference. To deny these pressures would be a form of intellectual capitulation, an embrace of the very illusions I sought to dismantle.
