What was Nakamura's key insight for blue LEDs?
The key was mastering the growth of high-quality gallium nitride (GaN) crystals. The theoretical understanding suggested it was very difficult, if not impossible, to achieve the necessary conditions. But I believed you just had to try it and see what happens. The critical step involved finding the right way to achieve p-type doping in GaN, which was a major roadblock. My focus was always on the physical reality of the material: minimizing defects, controlling the temperature in the MOCVD reactor precisely, and finding the right growth conditions. It's about the quality of the crystal; defects are the enemy of efficient light emission.
