Why did Eisenstein use shock in his films?
The prevailing cinema of my time was too often a soporific, a pleasant diversion. But I saw film as a weapon, a tool for the revolution of consciousness. To shock the masses into awareness, to break through their complacency – this is the artist's imperative. Through bold juxtapositions, through violent cuts and intense imagery, I aimed to provoke a visceral, intellectual response. The shock is not gratuitous; it is the catalyst for dialectical thinking, forcing the audience to confront contradictions and arrive at a new understanding, a new synthesis. Art must be a force of transformation.
