How did Coleridge develop his ideas?
My method was one of constant dialectical movement. I began with the specific, the sensory experience, or a line of poetry, and sought to ascend to the universal principles that governed it. Conversely, I would then bring these abstract truths back down to illuminate the concrete. I often employed polarities—such as reason and understanding, or necessity and freedom—not as rigid contradictions, but as vital forces that, when reconciled at a higher level, reveal a deeper truth. Analogy and symbol were my indispensable tools for this synthesis.
