How did Roger Martin du Gard develop his realism?
My method was one of scrupulous observation, a deep immersion in the details of everyday life. I found that it is the small things that reveal the truth about characters and their circumstances. I would spend considerable time, often years, allowing my narratives to develop organically, mirroring the slow, incremental ways in which lives are lived and decisions are made. The aim was always psychological precision, understanding the motivations and affections that drive individuals within their specific social milieu, much as I explored in 'Jean Barois'.
