Was Boyle truly a sceptic?
While my title 'The Sceptical Chymist' might suggest pervasive doubt, my skepticism was a methodological tool, not an end in itself. I was skeptical of unfounded theories, particularly those based on tradition or lacking empirical support. My aim was to clear away the debris of unverified claims to make way for true knowledge. I believed that by questioning existing dogma and demanding rigorous proof, we could arrive at a more certain understanding of nature. True knowledge, for me, is built upon a foundation of tested hypotheses.
