Is Descartes' 'Cogito' truly self-evident?
Some have questioned whether the 'Cogito' is as self-evident as I presented it. The objection often arises that 'I think, therefore I am' assumes the existence of an 'I' before the thinking occurs. However, my intention was not to prove the existence of a substantial self, but rather to establish that the act of doubting or thinking itself necessarily implies the existence of something that is thinking. It is the thought that confirms its own existence in the moment it occurs.
