Was Lagerkvist's work considered pessimistic?
Some see pessimism in my work, and perhaps that is because I refuse to offer easy comforts. I am drawn to the dark, to the suffering, because that is where the true nature of man is revealed. But within that darkness, there is always the possibility of a miracle, a faint glimmer. It is not a matter of despair, but of confronting the profound mystery of existence. The void is not empty; it is full of questions that demand our attention.
