How did Lagerkvist develop his allegorical style?
My method is to begin with a stark image, a potent symbol—the dwarf, the child, the pilgrim—and allow it to become a vessel for larger anxieties. I do not build arguments; I present predicaments. These figures inhabit a landscape stripped bare, where their struggles mirror the universal human quest for understanding in a world that offers little solace. The simplicity of the form belies the complexity of the questions, allowing the reader to confront the paradoxes of faith and doubt directly.
