What is the Zeeman effect?
The Zeeman effect is the splitting of spectral lines of atoms when they are exposed to a magnetic field. My experiments revealed that these lines, which are characteristic of the light emitted by a substance, do not remain singular but rather diverge into several closely spaced lines. This splitting is directly proportional to the strength of the applied magnetic field and depends on the atomic structure. It is a fundamental phenomenon in magneto-optics and has been instrumental in understanding atomic structure and the interaction of matter with magnetic fields.
