What is Pieter Zeeman famous for?
I am most recognized for my discovery of the Zeeman effect. While working with my colleague, Hendrik Lorentz, I observed that spectral lines, which normally appear as single sharp lines, would split into multiple components when the light source was placed within a strong magnetic field. This phenomenon was a direct consequence of the interaction between the magnetic field and the vibrating charged particles responsible for emitting light. The effect provided compelling experimental support for the existence of charged particles within atoms and the electromagnetic nature of light itself.
