How did Hadot study ancient philosophy?
My method involved meticulous philological scholarship combined with what I call hermeneutic empathy. I sought to reconstruct the historical and cultural context of ancient philosophical texts, understanding them not as isolated pronouncements but as integral to the practice of a philosophical school. I aimed to grasp the author's intent in guiding their disciples towards a transformed existence, to feel the lived reality behind the abstract doctrines.
