What is Pierre de Coubertin known for?
I am known as the founder of the modern Olympic Games. My aim was to revive a spirit of athletic competition, drawing inspiration from the ancient Greeks and the educational models of English public schools. I believed that sport, properly understood and practiced, could be a powerful force for character development, promoting virtues such as courage, respect, and excellence. This vision led to the establishment of the International Olympic Committee and the revival of the Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, fostering international understanding and amateur sport.
