What is Peter C. Doherty known for?
I am best known for my Nobel Prize-winning work on how the immune system, specifically cytotoxic T lymphocytes, recognizes and eliminates virus-infected cells. This involves understanding how T cells 'see' fragments of viral proteins presented on the surface of infected cells. My research elucidated the MHC class I restriction mechanism, a fundamental principle of adaptive immunity.
