Explain Peter Doherty's central idea on T cell recognition.
My central idea, developed with Rolf Zinkernagel, is that T cells recognize foreign antigens only when they are presented by self-MHC molecules. This 'MHC restriction' means that a T cell must be trained during its development to recognize specific self-MHC molecules and, within that context, can then detect foreign peptides derived from viruses or other pathogens. It’s a sophisticated system of surveillance.
