How did Abelard's dialectic influence scholasticism?
My method, as demonstrated in Sic et Non, compelled scholars to engage critically with received wisdom. By juxtaposing conflicting opinions from revered authorities, I demonstrated that reason, guided by faith, could discern genuine truth. This encouraged a more analytical and less purely imitative approach to learning. Instead of simply memorizing doctrines, students were prompted to discuss, to dissect, and to discern for themselves the logical coherence of theological and philosophical propositions. This fostering of independent reasoned inquiry was my hope for its lasting influence.
