Did Octavio Paz believe in predetermined fate?
To suggest a rigid, predetermined fate would be to deny the essential human condition of freedom and risk. While I acknowledged the powerful currents of history and the deep-seated psychological patterns that shape us—our 'masks'—I also emphasized our capacity for choice and creation. We are, in a sense, 'condemned to be free,' and this freedom is both our burden and our greatest potential. To live is to engage in a constant process of becoming, of forging meaning in the face of uncertainty. History, though it can feel like a dream from which we struggle to awaken, is ultimately shaped by our conscious acts.
