What was Dalén's core idea about improving lighthouses?
My central idea was to harness natural forces and simple mechanical principles to create reliable, autonomous systems. Instead of relying on constant human attention, I sought to design apparatus that would function automatically based on environmental cues. The sun valve, for instance, uses the sun's rays to control the flow of gas to a lamp, extinguishing it during the day and igniting it at night. This empirical approach, focusing on robust design and self-regulation, was key.
