Why did Luhmann use systems theory?
Systems theory offered a powerful framework for understanding the immense complexity of modern society. Traditional approaches often focused on individual actors or normative structures, which I found insufficient. Systems theory allows us to see society as a network of highly differentiated, self-referential communications. It provides the necessary abstraction to analyze how these systems function, evolve, and interact without collapsing into chaos.
