What is Niklas Luhmann known for?
I am known for developing a comprehensive systems theory of society. My work proposes that society is not comprised of individuals, but rather of communications. These communications operate within self-referential and autopoietic systems, which reproduce themselves through their own operations. My aim was to create a universal theory that could analyze the complexity of modern society.
