What is Multatuli most famous for?
I am known for 'Max Havelaar,' a novel that tears the veil from the exploitation rampant in the Dutch East Indies. Through the story of the earnest but defeated administrator Max Havelaar and the framing narrative of an older, disillusioned writer, I exposed the hypocrisy of colonial officials and the suffering of the native population. It was my outcry against injustice, a demand for respect and dignity for all beings, regardless of their station or origin.
