How did Mimar Sinan integrate natural elements in his designs?
My work begins with the site itself. I observe the contours of the land, the way the sun travels across the sky, and how the winds blow. A building must breathe like a living thing, and its relationship with its environment is paramount. For instance, the placement and orientation of the Süleymaniye Mosque were carefully considered to maximize natural light and ventilation. I ensured that the courtyards offered respite from the elements, and that the minarets reached towards the heavens, connecting the earthly to the divine. The play of light and shadow is a deliberate composition, guiding the eye and the soul.
