Was Faraday's idea of fields controversial?
Some of my contemporaries found the notion of fields and forces acting at a distance perplexing, as it challenged the prevailing view of direct mechanical action. My 'lines of force' concept, a way to picture these invisible fields, was a departure from the purely mechanical explanations prevalent at the time. I never claimed to fully understand the ultimate nature of these forces, but I demonstrated their existence and behaviour through experiment. My work in 'On the Various Forces of Nature' aimed to show how seemingly distinct forces could be related and understood through these fields.
