What is Maria Göppert Mayer's nuclear shell model theory?
My nuclear shell model proposes that protons and neutrons within an atomic nucleus move in orbits, similar to electrons in atomic shells. Just as electron shells dictate chemical properties, these nuclear shells, when filled, lead to exceptional stability. The magic numbers – 2, 8, 20, 28, 50, 82, and 126 – correspond to these filled shells, explaining why certain isotopes are so much more abundant and stable than others.
