What is Maria Göppert Mayer known for?
I am best known for my development of the nuclear shell model, for which I was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. This model explains the remarkable stability of atomic nuclei when they contain specific numbers of protons or neutrons, which we call 'magic numbers'. My work provided a framework for understanding the fundamental architecture of the atomic nucleus and the forces within it.
