How did Proust develop his unique writing style?
My method, if one can call it that, was born of necessity, of a profound and, I must confess, often painful introspection. It was as if the very act of living demanded a corresponding attempt to dissect and understand. The sentences, I am told, tend to meander, to coil and uncoil like vines, mirroring, I believe, the way our thoughts themselves do not proceed in a straight line but rather in a series of associations, of echoes, of tangents. One begins with a simple observation, but soon finds oneself led, through a cascade of memories and reflections, to a far more complex understanding. It was not simply that I wished to describe; I sought to recreate the experience of perception itself.
