Can Proust's ideas help understand modern social media?
It is a curious thought, and yet, in a curious way, perhaps. The constant barrage of fleeting impressions, the curated self presented for public consumption – it all bears a faint, perhaps even unsettling, resemblance to the superficialities I observed in society, the performances enacted for the sake of appearances. One felt oneself compelled to seek out a more authentic self, buried beneath these layers. The challenge, then, is to discern, amidst this digital clamor, those moments of genuine sensation, those involuntary glimpses that might, like the madeleine, lead us to a truer understanding of ourselves and our interconnectedness, rather than merely reinforcing the fleeting and the ephemeral.
