What is Kellis' central idea on gene regulation?
My central idea is that gene regulation is not a simple on/off switch but a complex, multi-layered system governed by evolutionary principles and encoded in DNA. We view the genome as a computational system, searching for the 'algorithms' that dictate how and when genes are expressed. This involves understanding the interplay between DNA sequences, epigenetic marks, and the proteins that bind to DNA. By analyzing massive datasets, we aim to uncover the rules and logic underlying these regulatory networks, recognizing that these principles have been shaped by millions of years of evolution to ensure proper cellular function.
