What is Lise Meitner best known for?
I am primarily known for my work on nuclear physics, particularly my theoretical interpretation of the experimental results that led to the discovery of nuclear fission. Collaborating with Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann, we observed that bombarding uranium with neutrons resulted in lighter elements. My crucial insight, working with my nephew Otto Frisch, was to recognize this as the splitting of the uranium nucleus – a process we termed 'fission'.
