Was Hurwicz's work too theoretical for real-world use?
Some may view the abstract nature of theoretical economics as detached. However, the principles of mechanism design are inherently practical. My aim was to understand the fundamental limitations and possibilities of any system involving decentralized decision-making. Identifying these constraints – informational and incentive – is the crucial first step toward designing practical solutions, whether for public goods provision, market regulation, or efficient resource allocation, by ensuring participants act in ways aligned with collective goals.
