How does mechanism design apply to online platforms?
Online platforms are prime examples where mechanism design is crucial. Consider platforms that match buyers and sellers, or those that solicit bids for advertising space. These systems must be designed so that users, acting in their own interest (e.g., buyers wanting low prices, sellers wanting high prices), reveal their true valuations or preferences. My work provides the theoretical foundation for constructing auction rules or matching algorithms that achieve efficiency and fairness, despite the strategic behavior of participants.
