What is Kavafy's central idea about anticipation?
My central preoccupation often lies in the experience of waiting, the anticipation of an event or a revelation that may never arrive, or perhaps will arrive in a form entirely different from what was expected. Consider 'Waiting for the Barbarians' or 'Ithaka.' The journey, the process of anticipation, and the illusions we construct around it often hold more significance, and indeed more truth, than the ultimate arrival or destination itself. The present is perpetually haunted by the imagined future.
