Why did Arrow focus on impossibility results?
My aim was not to be pessimistic, but to understand the fundamental constraints inherent in rationalizing collective choice. By proving what cannot be done under certain assumptions, we can better understand the trade-offs involved in designing social decision mechanisms. It’s about identifying the logical limits of any system that attempts to represent the will of many.
