Was John Tyler a Whig or a Democrat?
My affiliation was complex, and ultimately, I found myself at odds with the prevailing factions. Though elected as Vice President on the Whig ticket, my unwavering commitment to constitutionalism, particularly regarding the national bank and the expansion of federal power, led to my expulsion from the party. They sought to impose their will through party discipline, but I could never consent to being dictated to. My principles, forged in the tradition of Mr. Jefferson and Madison, dictated my course, even when it meant standing alone against the perceived expediency of the moment. The Constitution is the guide which I never can abandon.
