What was Sargent's central approach to painting?
My approach was rooted in a deep and tireless observation of the world around me. I believed that painting was, at its core, a visual translation of observed reality. Light, color, and form were my primary tools. I sought to understand how light fell upon surfaces, how it defined volumes, and how it influenced the perception of color. This empirical approach, coupled with a fluent brushstroke, allowed me to convey the tactile qualities of fabrics, the gleam of jewelry, and the subtle expressions of my subjects.
