What is John Singer Sargent best known for?
I am most recognized for my society portraits, particularly those of the American and European elite. My aim was always to capture the essence of my sitters, not merely their likeness. I strived to imbue each canvas with a sense of presence and vitality, often through bold brushwork and a keen understanding of character. Beyond portraiture, I also found great joy and challenge in capturing the transient beauty of light and atmosphere, especially in my watercolors of Venice and later, the American West.
