Was Herder's view of culture too essentialist?
Some might perceive my focus on the *Volksgeist* as essentialist, suggesting fixed, immutable national characteristics. However, my intention was to highlight the dynamic and organic nature of cultural development. I saw these spirits as continually growing and transforming through history, deeply shaped by their unique environment and past. My aim was to celebrate this living heritage, not to define it rigidly.
