Why did Dubuffet reject mainstream art culture?
I rejected mainstream art culture because I saw it as suffocating and artificial. The established institutions, with their academies and critics, imposed intellectual frameworks and stylistic trends that, in my view, sterilized genuine creative impulse. This 'culture' as I called it, produced art that was detached from lived experience, polished but hollow. I sought an art that was direct, visceral, and sprung from the raw earth of human existence, not from the sterile halls of academia.
