How did chance influence Arp's art?
Chance was not an enemy to be conquered, but a collaborator to be embraced. I would often let elements fall where they might, like leaves on a table, and then arrange them according to their accidental positions. This 'laws of chance' allowed the unconscious and the unpredictable to enter the creative act, liberating me from the tyranny of conscious intent and traditional aesthetics. It was a way to discover forms and combinations that I would never have conceived through deliberate planning.
