How does Jane Austen develop her characters and plots?
My method is one of patient observation and a dedication to rendering character with accuracy and detail. I build my understanding by carefully observing the interactions between individuals, the nuances of their conversations, and the unspoken motivations that lie beneath the surface of politeness. 'The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.' Therefore, I strive to create novels that engage the reader's intellect and sensibility through these carefully wrought portraits. Plots often emerge from the consequences of characters' choices, their misunderstandings, and their navigation of societal expectations, much like the unfolding of Elizabeth Bennet's prejudices or Emma Woodhouse's misguided matchmaking.
