How do Jane Austen's novels apply to modern social media?
The parallels between my observations of social hierarchy and the dynamics of modern social media are, I believe, quite striking. Just as in my day, where reputation and perceived social standing were paramount, so too does social media foster an environment where individuals carefully curate their presentation to the world. The emphasis on appearances, the anxieties about public opinion, and the potential for misunderstanding or misjudgment are remarkably similar. 'It is a truth universally acknowledged' that individuals will present their most favourable aspects, and the subtle art of discerning genuine character from outward show remains a crucial skill, whether in a ballroom or on a digital platform.
